We Do What We Love and Coffee with Deanne #41: Tips for Beginning a Large Rug

IMG_1831I have one friend who gets more done then I could ever imagine doing. She works hard, volunteers and is good to her family. She also is able to go slow sometimes, take time out and refresh.

I never ask her “how do you do it?” because I know how she does it. She just decides what is important and what is not. She eliminates what is not. She delegates. And the rest of the time she just does what she does.

What is important changes over time. One time it was important for me to bake cookies. I had small kids and they needed that smell in the house to remember when they got older. So I baked cookies then but I don’t anymore (unless I want them). In some houses baking cookies was never important and that’s okay. It was important to me at the time so I did it. Now the idea of baking cookies or cinnamon buns hardly occurs to me. I make time for other things now that won’t even occur to me in a few years.

The essence is we make time for what we really honestly, truly believe to be important. We all have the same amount of time, some of us are faster at some things, but then again, some of are slower at some things so it probably balances out. Our values determine what we do, what we make time for and though our core values may remain the same over a life time, our circumstances change, and sometimes what we value changes too. And that’s ok.

Coffee with Deanne

Thank you for reading this newsletter. The fact that you bother and you mention to me that you did makes me want to keep writing and doing Coffee with Deanne. I am really pleased about turning fifty. I have to admit things have shifted in the last few years both physically and emotionally. We women are different in our fifties. I have been told that time and time again, now I know it to be true. I am grateful for time to play, like the time it takes to carry on the foolishness of making this bike. I am happy to be fifty, to see my daughter graduate from high school, and my son from university. The other day I rode 25 k on my bike, not the one shown below mind you. It is a pleasure to have time again to do things. Fifty looks pretty good to me. May it be a blessing to me, and may what ever age you are at, be a blessing to you.

Come visit the studio and see our yarn bombed bike!

Let’s Eat…

This week’s recipe is a favourite of Laurie’s dad Reg. Her mother used to bake them for him all the time and now Laurie and her sister Maureen take turns doing so.

Annie’s Oatmeal Raisin Muffins

1 cup oatmeal

1 cup raisins

1/4 cup butter

Pour 1 cup boiling water over these ingredients. Let stand for 20 minutes.

then add:

1 cup brown sugar

2 beaten eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

and stir well.

then add:

1 cup flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. baking soda

pour into 12 muffins cups. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Could substitute other ingredients for the raisins. During the summer months Laurie and Maureen make them with blueberries. If doing so add the berries at the same time as you do the flour, not at the beginning with the butter and oatmeal.  Would likely also be good with walnuts or pecans.

June Blooms!

Coffee With Deanne

What a Great Week!

Creativity ebbs and flows. As summer approaches I am interested in primping the studio, making sure our front door is warm and welcoming. I like to focus on teaching all the people who come through how to hook. I am concerned that people who come from miles away have a good time when they get here. I don’t get the urge to start a big rug, but like to work on smaller pieces so that I can switch ideas fast if I want. Summer is about being hospitable. It is about enjoying the freshness of the season. It is about not missing out. I still hook of course. I always hook.

In the picture above you’ll see myself and the whole gang of rug hookers from Ohio, Virginia, Ontario, PEI and our own Springhill who stormed the studio for three days! We had a wonderful time creating, visiting, eating and getting to know each other better. The staff enjoyed all the excitement and working with every one of these beautiful, kind and talented women.

Are you a member of a rug hooking group or would like to be part of a group that gathers at the studio for a one-day or multi-day workshop with me? Just contact the studio and we can discuss the arrangements.

Easier Than Pie – Triple Coconut Cake

Cake

2 1/2 cups flour

1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut

3 tsps. baking powder

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

3 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp.coconut extract

1 can – 400ml – coconut milk

Method:

Spray two 9″ round pans and line with parchment paper.

Sift flour, coconut and salt in a large bowl.

In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.

Beat eggs in one at a time.

Add vanilla and coconut extracts.

With mixer on low beat the butter mixture into the flour mixture alternating with coconut milk.

Divide batter between the two pans. Smooth tops.

Bake for 30-35 minutes in 350 degree oven.

Cool completely before frosting.

Frosting

1 cup butter, softened

1 tsp coconut extract

dash of vanilla extract

3 cups icing sugar

1/2 cup melted and cooled white chocolate chips

1/4 cup milk

Beat butter in large bowl until creamy. Add coconut and vanilla extract, one cup of the icing sugar and the chocolate chips.

Beat for one minute then add the rest of the icing sugar alternating it with the milk. Beat until light, fluffy and smooth.

Place one layer of cake on large plate and spread frosting on top all the way to the edge. Put the second layer in place and frost the top of the cake, spreading the remaining frosting along the sides.

Sprinkle top with coconut.

This is a beautiful dessert.

It’s Workshop Week!

Coffee With Deanne

Yippee they are here. All week I was kinda wound up and over excited . I couldn’t hook, I couldn’t work but I could eat, let’s not go too far. I was so distracted because I had a crew coming for a workshop. We had ten from Ohio, two from Ontario, one from Springhill and one from PEI. I so appreciate people coming here to learn with me and I love being able to lay a hand on someone’s shoulder and lay the perfect piece of wool on their frame. I cannot do that online.Whether someone has come from down the road or travelled far, I appreciate the time they have taken to be with me. So all week I was saving up my energy for this beautiful group of women to arrive. Today I immersed myself in many different projects, many different stories and I learned a lot as well. Each person comes with a story and we sit next to each other and tell them, and for a community for a few days. I love watching their rugs emerge, their stories unravel, and their eyes light up as they learn. Thank you to everyone here today, thank you to anyone who has ever made the trek here to the studio. Right now I feel so lucky.

If I could hook only landscapes it would not bother me a bit. I think they are the most beautiful of all my rugs because there is so much freedom of movement in them. I really feel them as I am making them. I relate to them like I relate to the fields beside me as i am taking a walk or riding by on my bike. In the landscape of the red leaves I love the way the hills meet the water with their pointy eagle like beaks. It is dramatic. Hooking landscapes soothes me in the same way  a walk or a bike ride does. I wonder what type of hooking does that for you? Is it geometrics, florals etc? I think that when you find that you hit your stride. You know you are on the right path.

As Good As It Gets

My favourite barn is this one. Why do I have a favorite barn? Who knows. I just do and it is this one on the marsh. A few nights ago I took a long walk out past the barn to meet the bay of fundy once again. It’s like an old boyfriend that you just love running into again and again. I love the colour of it’s skin, that moody grey brown mauve. That bay has reinvented blue so many times that I now know a dozen more shades of it. Read more

We love food and we’d like to share some of our favourite recipes with you. This one was recommended by Laurie whose husband Barry USED to believe that “real men don’t eat quiche.”

Chicken and Broccoli Quiche

2 cups grated cheddar

1 1/2 cup chopped cooked chicken or tuna

2/3 cup chopped onion

2 cups cooked broccoli

1 1/3 cups milk

4 eggs

1/2 cup flour

salt and pepper

Spray one large or two medium-sized pie plates with non-stick Pam.

Beat together eggs, flour and milk.

Add other ingredients.

Pour into pie plates.

Bake at 350 F degrees for 35-45 minutes.

Four servings.

This makes its own crust.

Note:

If making one big quiche you may have to bake for more than 45 minutes. Depending on the oven it takes a while to get it thoroughly baked in the centre.

Newsletter – The Mystery of the Finish

The Mystery of the Finish

This morning I bounded out of bed because I think I am about to finish a really big rug. It is two very large sails that I sat under as we took a ride in the Caribbean, my first vacation in ten years. Don’t feel bad for me, my job is a bit of a vacation. Though I spent over a month making that rug I really have no idea how it will turn out. I am working from a picture in my head, the real thing is a mystery. It reminds me of the Iris Dement song, “Let the mystery be.” which is about religion and spirituality. I think it goes for creativity too. It is part of the letting go, the knowledge that you cannot control what you are making completely. You just put yourself into it, immerse yourself and accept what happens. Another metaphor for life, another reason why people say art is life. I hope this spring that each of you has something that you are immersed in because life is so much better when you do. I need to be engaged, immersed, excited by what there is to do in front of me. When I am it makes me happy. This morning I am happy to finish and reveal this little mystery sitting before me.What are you engaged in? Where is your rug going? What is your next project. That is the beauty of finishing…a new beginning.

Five Trees Online Lesson…

There is a single tree on the way to Parrsboro that always captures my attention. It’s often that way isn’t it? Often there is some landmark on a familiar drive that we wait for as the landscape whizzes by us. We see it, it captures our imagination, soothes us on our way.

That single tree high up on a blueberry field has inspired many rugs for me and Five Trees is one of them. Last January I decided to create a pattern inspired by this rug, and create a Work Along with Deanne Online Course which we offered this past March. This Work Along Course was a great success and those who took it produced amazing work.
Now I am offering the content from the Five Trees Work Along organized, and in one place that you can access forever. This course includes ten lessons with videos will be yours to watch again and again and you can work along at your own pace on the Five Tree Rug.
I’ll be offering some special tips on hooking more quickly and finishing projects to keep you inspired. The 10 lessons will include colour images, written instructions, and video all about hooking this particular Pattern, the Five Trees.
If you would like to purchase the Five Trees Pattern you will find that here.

You can also purchase a complete kit with the pattern and cut wool for the Five Trees here.

Recipe for Studio Oatcakes

Dear Diary , for years I made these oatcakes…the one shown here were made by my faithful friend Jane Allen, who makes them for me during our workshops. It is a recipe found in a church cookbook at the little Anglican Church where I was married, and my children were baptised. It was submitted by my friend’s mother, Mrs. Sheila Sanford.

When Jane makes them she adds a little extra sugar. She has never said that but I can just tell. They are delicious either way …read more

Newsletter – The Value of the Handmade

The Value of the Handmade

Hello there , this week’s coffee with Deanne is about the handmade. There is nothing so beautiful as making a handmade gift for someone sand having them want it and love it. Whether it is a hooked rug, a sweater, a handmade dish cloth, the feeling we get when someone loves what we make them is exquisite. I also love the making of the thing because they are on my mind and in my heart as I make it. My new blue sweater that Brenda made makes me feel comforted as well as comfortable because I know she considered me as she made it. We need to take the time to make things for ourselves and for those we love. That is something that is worth making time for. In a world of busy , busy, busy, making time has become so important. Time spent is the new hot commodity because the supply is low.As we enter into spring continue to take time to make. You never regret time spend winding down, time spent with your hands making things with love. Make time.

How much Amherst can change in a year…

Downtown Amherst is changing place. Today I left Breakfast at Brittainy’s our town’s new breakfast restaurant after having coffee with a bunch of women’s friends. I then picked up a flower for Heather Shatford, the harpist who played at the Roger Bacon Dinner  at the Curling club. Donna, the florist,   has just celebrated being a year in business in the downtown. I then stopped at Manasseh and picked up some Dragon’s Breath Blue cheese to go with local beef steak that I plan to cook for summer. I then dropped into Damaris for  a Express Manicure (twenty minute mani for $20). Well that was my downtown today. Pretty nice I would say.

Newsletter: Two New Online Lessons for You!

Hello there,
I know that some of you live in warm places and will hardly believe it when I tell you that it’s snowing here in Nova Scotia today, but it’s true. We’re all still going around in hand-knit sweaters. Tonight at my knitting group I’ll be working on a fisherman’s toque. I’ll probably have to wear it home.

Yesterday morning I rushed in to the studio to work on my big sails rug that I have on the frame. It’s inspired by my recent little vacation. I’m using tans, creams and dull teals instead of the whites and blues that I actually saw – that’s my prerogative as the maker. It’s one of the joys of rug hooking to be able to make those kinds of changes on your own whim.

I am often asked about how I hook. A few years ago I created an online course called Wild with Wool and taught many people how I hook. It was so exciting to work with people all over the world and show them just how I approach all areas of my rug hooking, from gathering the fabric, to dying the wool, to finishing. This course is now online and available to purchase anytime. After you buy the Wild with Wool tutorial, it’s yours to keep forever and you can work away on it at your own pace. I am a big online learner myself and believe in the value of it. I have bought courses and learned so much. I encourage you to try this and other of my online courses.
Today in the studio we were packing up our pattern of the month club to send out and I am working on a special writing project that I’ll share more about later.

It is a good day to be inside and busy!

SAGE

I chose the word sage, not because it grows outside my door, not because it goes great pan fried in butter over ravioli, but because it has a dual meaning.

Sage is a herb often rolled together and burnt  and used in smudging ceremonies to heal negative thoughts. That is interesting but not the reason I chose it.

Sage smells beautiful. It is a beautiful colour. More great reasons to choose it for this word rug, but not mine.

I chose it because it also means someone who imparts wisdom, and we all need a sage in our life.

These rugs were some of my first attempts at Abstract and modern design. They have all been sold except for my Chasing Klimt, the first picture you see here.

I like to review my work, whether it’s rugs , or just the growth of the studio. It makes you feel like you have been somewhere and that there are places left to go.  Review is important, whether it is your sketch books, your scrapbooks, old pictures… read more.

Monochromatic Hooking and Newsletter

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Dear Diary,

Just got this rug completed! Once I get to a certain point I just have to finish because I am so excited at the prospect of seeing the completed thing. Even though I have a picture in my mind , it is always a complete surprise.

You’ll notice a few changes on the website. We are changing our background colour to white and the blog has been updated. There will be a new home page too that matches the blog, we are working on that. I want it to be a bit more streamlined and modern. Change is the only thing that is constant they say. I am also working on a new logo for the studio so there will be more changes coming. On Saturday afternoon I sat with the blog and thought about where I am going with it and decided that I am not quite ready to let it go. If you look in the archives of the blog, there are hundreds of posts. Yet sometimes I still have a little something to write about so I think the new redesign will inspire me to get back to the blog a little bit more. Keep visiting, you’ll be hearing from me  more there.
Writing is not something that I can command . It just comes when it comes so I have to be patient with myself. I have learned though that if I show up, often the words will show up too. Just like your hooking, if you show up to the frame, the hook is just waiting for you.
In todays’ Coffee with Deanne,at the bottom of this newsletter I give you some tips on monochromatic hooking with Abstracts. We have really been focusing on making these videos and this week we have even set up a little studio in the back room here so that we can have a permanent spot with better lighting ( we bought studio lights to go with our microphone) to take pictures of rugs, record the videos and make our production quality a little better.  We are also integrating the whole shop so that the back room is not just for knitters and knitting. Now if you want to see all we have you  will have to wander through the whole studio because I have been putting wool cloth in the back, wool yarns in the front and just generally mixing everything up!

Cheers, Deanne

My book Simply Modern had a really nice review in Rug Hooking Magazine. I also had an article about Simplicity in Hooking in this month’s magazine. I am also working on another article for them. You can buy it here.

These bracelets are locally made of pewter and feature an open cuff style so they will fit all wrists.

Deanne’s Diary…

Tiny is okay. My office and studio in my downtown space is about six feet by fourteen feet. There is no extra room. You could not have a meeting there of more than three people but it is what I have and honestly I make the best of it.

If I had a glorious studio on the coast with white curtains blowing in the wind and the sea out my door would my rugs be any better? Probably not.

A studio space is about what is done between the walls. Whether it is an extra bedroom, a desk in the corner, a part of the barn or shed, it is really about what you do there and the materials you gather to work with.

Our motto here at the studio, as you might already know, is  create beauty everyday. That can be done in a chair. It is not about how much space we have to work in it is about how much work we do in that space. When I come in here in the morning I am grateful for this space because it is a room of my own. I can gather my thoughts, write, hook, organize, and play. It may not be grand but it is my own and it is important to carve out a little space for yourself in your home for your creative pursuits.

Whether it be the corner of a room or a room of your own, I encourage you to fill it with the things you love, the books that matter , and the wool that will inspire you.

Then the next thing is to make a creative habit of going to that space and spending time, sketching, making, hooking,. creating, reading. You won’t regret it. You’ll love it.

Many of you have been asking, How do I get a create beauty everyday bracelet, well this is the newsletter that offers the bracelet. We will give away a bracelet with every order over $50 excluding shipping so if you want a bracelet order today!

Deanne’s Diary…

Rug hookers quoting Plato….well of course. I would not expect any less. I actually brought out my old university copy of Plato last week after seeing the quote “Be kind for everyone you meet is facing a great battle.” several times recently.Truth is though I could not sink my teeth in it and quickly gave up and sat down to hook. It is hard sometimes to read those great books with out the incentive of a class.Yet the strength of the quote remains.

It is true that each of carries with us our private stories , our personal selves and we need to look at each other knowing that, and try to treat each other kindly.

Last week you see I was home with the cold and I read a lot. I read a lot about business and creativity and thought a lot about my own experiences. I would really like to write something about art /craft and business from my own perspective that would be useful to people who want to start their own creative business. It might end up being a tutorial or online course but I do want to do that.
A few years ago when we came up with the idea, “Create Beauty Everyday” it was after a period of reflection, and a lot of conversations with other creative people like Susan Black, of Susan Black Designs. She helped me formulate that in that she kept saying, “Are you just hooking rugs or are you doing more than that.?”
Many things we do have lots of meaning and sometimes we have no idea of the meaning behind what we are doing. It just arises. Some of the notes and letters I have gotten over the years have shown me that here at the studio my life is about more than hooking rugs or knitting, or making because making is about more than that.
We make because we must, because there is something inside of us driving us. Something that wants to emerge from us in a tactile form. Yet, ironically,  making  beautiful things is about so much more than the thing itself because of our intrinsic desire to get it out. Making something is about expressing our creativity, our soulfulness, and this is deep stuff on one level, and just a rug on another level. Kind of like Plato, really simple, and really deep at the same time.

Today we tasted spring, and the flavour was maple. I took a walk into the fenwick sugar bush to Neil Ripley’s camp which is “off the grid”. Everything, not just the maple candy, is handmade. For me , this walk is an annual trek, and some years I take a few pictures.  Today I used the camera on the stacks of cord wood that he had piled in six foot lengths that he used to heat the burners to boil down the sap…read more

Just hook your rug, never mind imaging it to be the best yet.  Never mind comparing it to anyone  else’s. Let it be yours and let that be good enough.

In this weeks video I read you a little poem by Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, an Irish nun and activist whose work I came across years ago when visiting Ireland.

I still read it sometimes to remind myself to be grateful for what I have, the work I do, my family, my kids, my house, my life I s’pose.

The deep of winter is a time for reflection as it is in a way, a retreat. Some of you I know are in warm climates and I am sure there are times in every climate for retreating.

This winter as I struggle to paint something beautiful I am reminded of what it is like to try hard and not meet your own expectations of your self. I know that sometimes when you hook rugs they might not turn out just like you want or imagined.

I experience that everyday. It is a real frustration but one that I can work through by keeping on working at it. When I paint I want my work to look like the painting of artists whose work I love but they only ever look like mine, the beginner. Still I paint, still I hook, still I write because it matters to me that I do.  ~Deanne

Coffee with Deanne – Episode 14 – The Importance of Finishing

Click on the video below to watch…Please subscribe to my channel and share with a friend.

Renew….Regenerate…Refresh…
Storm stayed? Home by the fire. Hooking, knitting , reading, eating popcorn. It sounds so good but honestly, I have had my fill.

No sense complaining about the weather though, because it is on a much grander scale than I can imagine. Still it is natural to feel a little hemmed in when the roads are slippery and you don’t want to head out on the highway. That is winter. I laugh at myself because I probably would’nt go anywhere anyway but I like to think I might.

All told, it is a good time to hunker down and get things finished. Finishing things is not just a matter of hauling out a project and getting back at it. Sometimes it is about reinventing it and adding new wool or new ideas to it. It is important to reinvigorate a project, strengthen it, renew it.

If you left it behind there is a reason and it probably needs some new input from you. Regeneration is important in art and craft, and of course in life. We all need new ideas and new materials to inspire us. So let the snow fly – since we have no choice in the matter, we might as well embrace it.

We have done some renewal in the studio this winter. Refreshing our wool supply, adding a new line of yarns to the knitting studio, starting our new online course of Five Trees, and I just put the finishing touches on our powder room which is now a bit of a woodsy feminine powder palace. You’ll just have to come see. It is it’s own thing.
As for me, I continue to to go to the Y, eat candy, walk, hook, knit and paint and read, these being my major activities. Waiting for the snow to clear so I can hit the open road and head to Halifax and visit the art galleries  and feed the artists soul in me and just walk the city streets for a day. I hope you are enjoying the winter, that you finish your rugs so you can feel the joy of starting a new one. – Deanne

Finding ways to be better, refining things, that is what we do here at the studio. That is what I do as a person.

This month we have been looking at ways of making the studio prettier and more comfortable and more organized.  Ever notice that the big stores put all their organizing stuff on sale this time of year. They are full of plastic containers and bins, ready for us to take home and fill.

Well it must be that winter is the time for this sort of thing, and we here at the studio are just part of a larger trend.

This afternoon, I hope to reorganize all my plastic bins of wool onto open shelving in our dye kitchen. Having that wool hidden away in bins is just not working for me.

I need it out where I can see it, touch it, feel it, admire it. It is too pretty to hide. Norma put some big steel shelves together for me this morning and I promised I’d take her out for a piece of pie for doing it.

So those shelves are going to be the stacked with wool , all pretty very soon, and the bins will be relegated to the basement…emptied!

You’ll find two little videos in here this month…one tells you about our upcoming Five Trees  Online Course.

Everyday when I take my walk I get new ideas for this course and I am rely looking forward to it. We have lots of people registering already so if you are thinking of it, let us know as we need to get the supplies out to you. You can purchase it below.
Thanks so much for reading the newsletter and being part of the studio life…Deanne

Well so far mid way into January my promises to myself (not resolutions) have been kept rather well. I joined the YMCA. I have been walking at the local track. Today I competed a painting. You see, a resolution sounds as if it is a rule, and you know what most of us like to do with rules.A little promise to myself though is just that, a chance to be a little bit more. I find it interesting that by mid January no one even speaks of resolutions /promises anymore. It is as if the idea is finished, when really it has hardly begun.

On New Year’s Eve, my good friend Elizabeth, who owns Damaris Spa and Manasseh Food Market invited a group of women to sit around for a 2:30 tea and talk about what they wanted for their community in the coming year. We met again yesterday and have come up with several plans that we as a group might take on. One is meeting once a month for dinner to support each other, and we’ll call it the idea factory, a place we can gather to flush out ideas with each other. It might or might not work, but the the thing is we are gonna try it.A group of women, dinner, a glass of wine maybe, and a chance to talk about turning small ideas into action. We have also decided to create a chapter of 100 Women Who Care ( a group that works together, each donating $100 every three months to a worthy cause in their community) here in Amherst/Sackville.  It is just the first idea of our little idea factory.

In ourselves we are enough, but together we can be more. I love the idea of creating a group of women to learn and grow with and I am hopeful that we will grow together towards a stronger community, but also that each of us will become stronger with in our community.

Whether you have made a promise to yourself or to a group, we still have time to implement them. I kept promising that I would come up with a new online course but could not seek out the way for me to do it until today.Today I decided that I would offer one starting the end of February and for the first time, it would be a course that offers a pattern that you can experience hooking along with me, as together we create the same design. We’ll spend the next several weeks getting ready, and I hope you’ll join me. It is designed for you to finish the rug in five weeks.

So now I am off to hook a rug, slap the first layer of paint on a new canvas, and to make a bundle or two.

A Note from Deanne…

Each morning , The Halifax Herald Newspaper is delivered to my door. My nephew, Aaron Beswick, writes for the Herald so I scan it for his byline. I quickly look over the obituaries, and read the headlines cover to cover.

Once in awhile I read an article. This morning I read an article about a young woman who was a major fundraiser for the Red Cross who died at age forty three. When asked about her, the president of Clearwater Seafoods who worked closely with her as she fundraised for disaster relief said that she was humble, that she never gained the arrogance that sometimes comes with age.

I felt it was a lovely thing to be said. Sometimes as we age, as we accomplish things we do gain a certain surety, an arrogance , it’s true. We become set in our ways, sure that how we have decided to do it is the best way, because we have tried many other ways.

I am fond of quoting Margaret Lawrence who said, “You’re young, you know things now you won’t know later.” Sometimes I believe it, but sometimes I wonder.

This weekend we had to drive an hour to see my daughter play hockey. On the way we listened to the coffee house radio station and I started thinking about who wrote all these great songs with such profound lyrics and it came to me that they were all young….early twenties. Think of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John,Stevie Nicks and the list goes on.

They were all early twenties when they stated the most profound truths, that have resonated for generations now. They were young but they knew a lot. I can hardly believe how smart they were for being so young.

As a mother of two young adults both of these truths are good for me to remember. Sometimes when we get older we are too sure, and sometimes when we are younger we still know even though we do not have age on our side. I want to be one of those people who ages well, like Alice , a woman at my curling club, who retired over twenty years ago and still curls. Who doesn’t?

I also want to be around younger people, hopefully have some of them work here with me, learn from them as they learn from me. Age seems to be the recurring theme for me this week. It keeps popping up. Last night I joined the YMCA and the sweet little thing on the desk asked me if I wanted a regular or seniors membership. I smiled, pulled back my talons, and said regular. My good friend Lily became a grandmother, when her granddaughter Lily, as well, entered the world. Age is not really on my mind, but it is in my face, so to speak (literally too , if you ask the sixteen year old at the Y).

This afternoon at the studio we are getting together for a planning session to think about the coming year, to embrace some new ideas, find simpler ways of doing the same things. It will be important for me to let go of “what I know” for what might be.

We have a wide age range here at the studio, from thirty six to sixty five or so. We all have different ideas and approaches that come from being ourselves, but also from our experiences, our upbringing and even our generation. We are all sure of ourselves in one way or another.

We very rarely have staff meetings ( I hate them from my early work days in other places) but it is really important to get together and talk and plan because we have to do that for you, and all the other rug hookers out there.

We need to make sure we are doing our best to inspire you and to create beauty everyday ourselves.

A Note from Deanne…

Winter here so far has been pretty good, not too much snow, easy to get around. Usually by now it has set in deep but this year we have gotten a reprieve. Once it starts late it cannot be an exceptionally long one. Yet I have to prepare for it, for the frozenness of February, for the length of March. It is a preparation of the mind, getting ready.

So I do this as I enter the new year. I try to embrace the possibilities of ideas. Small things. In January I’ll go to the city to see the Mary Pratt exhibit at the AGNS. I’ll go out for a good meal while I’m there. Things to look forward to. I try to plan for beauty and some joy. I hate to think of losing my Christmas lights so I am trying to think of how else I can light up the winter in my home.

This winter I’ll look at the Women’s store that we opened across the street and figure out how we let people know that we are there. I’ll think about how we get out the message that all women are beautiful, and that is the premise that we work from. We’ll have a planning session here at the studio and figure out how we will continue to create beauty everyday and inspire others to do the same. It is our mantra. We practice it. We believe it. We dream it up, one year to the next. I have two pages of ideas , some will get scratched out but some will get embraced and nurtured.

Embrace is a nice word I think, for what I am doing here. Christmas is over bout the new year is just beginning. Brenda told me on the Chinese Calendar it is the year of the sheep. Now that is something to embrace.

So today I woke up ready to embrace the new year. I like that word “embrace”. It makes me think of love.

Coffee with Deanne Episode Five

Well here is another one….I am really having fun doing these videos. I guess you may have noticed I am doing these instead of writing right now. At least for a little while.

This weekend is our big Grand Opening of Thirty Church : The Women’s Store so I am excited about that. We have a ribbon cutting with the mayor at 11:30 on Saturday.

This fall has been really exciting. On Monday we had a book launch with The Bethany Group in Halifax. It was an honour to be received by them and hosted. We all had a good time.

Today I plan to hook, and order wool in the afternoon but I am working in the women’s store in the morning. I love to be busy in the days and follow that with quiet evenings to replenish.

Here is the Studio Oatcake Recipe that Deanne mentions…

Studio Oatcakes

recipe from Mrs. Sheila Sanford

These are a studio favourite, good old fashioned Nova Scotia oatcakes. They’re the real thing. Great served with maple butter, honey or cheddar cheese. Nothing better that these with a cup of King Kole tea…red Roses , or Morses… they are all good
3 cups oats,  3 cups flour , 1 cup sugar ,  1 cup butter,  1 cup shortening,  1/4 cup water,  1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients together, and work into softened butter and shortening. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into circles with a glass. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

If you want them to taste just like the ones we serve here in the studio I think you might double the sugar!
