Getting Wild with Wool: An online course about hooking rugs with Deanne Fitzpatrick
Hooking Rugs with Style and Substance

Deadline for Registration will be February 11, 2013

You can sign up here by clicking on the add to cart button and going through online checkout.

We are offering this course again as so many missed the deadline and requested it. It will not be offered again for quite sometime so if you are interested please register this session.

With our first session well under way and going really well, I decided to offer this course again this spring as so many people have expressed an interest.

This course will focus on the techniques and ideas that I use to create rugs. There will be emphasis on explaining the style in which I hook through video lessons created for this course.

As this is the first time I have ever offered an online course you will be on a bit of a learning curve with me. I promise to make it as easy and useful as I can. Please know that I am learning to as we work together.

What we will cover:

Week one:Getting into the groove of the hook and understanding technique

Week two:understanding materials, movement

Week three:Colour and Texture

Week four:Creativity and Rug hooking

Week Five: Webinar with Questions and Answers and show of our work.. we will see what technology will work best for this.

What is the plan for the course:

Each week I will post the articles and videos about the topic. It will be self directed, you can go online at anytime and look at the course materials, read, watch and learn. The assignments and tips and ideas will be there for you to carry out through the week.

In our online learning community you can post pictures and stories about your progress which I will read and comment directly on.

You will be given a password for the weekly lesson and the online learning community.

You will need:

  • a computer that allows you to watch video and basic computer skills
  • a camera so you can share your images if you wish
  • an email address to receive information
  • rug hook, frame, pattern and backing, and a selection of wool in a variety of textures.

You can purchase a course materials package on line as an add on to the course if you wish, but remember shipping can take up to two weeks to the states.

a few hours each week to spend on your hooking and assignments

You will receive:

  • detailed posts each week about the topic at hand with
  • video each week explaining the section with close ups
  • photo tutorials about the ideas discussed in the post
  • an assignment for you to complete that will help integrate your learning on the weeks topic
  • a section of tips and ideas for the weeks topic
  • inspiration and ideas about rug hooking, creativity, and art

instruction on technique

  • a place to ask questions and get direct feedback from Deanne
  • at the end of the weekly post you can post comments , questions, and input and I will respond

How do I communicate with others in the course?

There will be an online community where you can post pictures of your work in progress and other information on the topic.

You can also interact through the comments on the blog post or by emailing each other directly if you both agree to share your email address with someone else.

I will not be working with people privately and independently in this course but as part of the community. I will be viewing all the images, comments and notes that are posting and offering comprehensive, honest feedback as much as possible.

If you want private lessons online, that can be arranged separately from the course, through skype.

Start date: February, 2013

End date: March , 2013

Cost: $99

How do I pay?

You can pay by ordering online with visa or master card anytime. Payment will be processed upon registration.

;

Do I have to show my work and complete the assignments?

That is completely up to you. You can just follow along quietly if you prefer, or you can participate a lot in the community and the assignments. I work on an adult learning model , understanding that the easier we make it for people to learn at different times, in their own ways, the more they can learn.

Do I have to be available at a certain time?

No, because we are working in so many different time zones the course will be available to you when your schedule permits.I would encourage you to check in several times a week to keep yourself updated. We will leave the material up for four weeks after the course is over for you to review.

You can sign up here by clicking on the add to cart button and going through online checkout

If you have more questions you can email me at info@hookingrugs.com

Please note I have added an optional textured wool package for the course to the online shop if you want it because people asked for it.

You can work with your own materials or purchase any kit or pattern to work along with on this course. I am designing it for independent study so you choose the project you want to work on. If you want the textured package or supplies from the course please order it early so you will have it in time, thanks so much.

What people say about my online workshop:

What People Say About My Online Course:

“Based on my experience with Deanne’s first online course in February, I can recommend her as a teacher. She communicates openly both in her written and spoken words. Her explanations of “the what to do – why to do – and how to do” via her videos, her writings, her photos of the work, are clear, very helpful and motivating. In addition, those online members who respond and ask questions have also added to my learning experience. This is a worthwhile 5 week opportunity in which you are encouraged and guided to go at your own pace.”

“Thanks so much Deanne. I have thoroughly enjoyed your writings , videos etc. In a previous time I taught painting and it was incredible when a person realized they could produce art when they always said, “I have no artistic talent.” I have thoroughly enjoyed your class and all the lessons and I keep going back and reading everything over and over””I wish I could bottle this feeling and sell it because I would be a rich woman. Wow, do you ever inspire a person.””Great Workshop Deanne, so much info and ideas. these lesssons have been really packed.

I wanted to say if anyone is thinking of signing up for Deanne’s online course do it! As anyone who’s taken a course with Deanne knows, she is a great and generous yeacher who brings alot of experience, imagination, and , always, creativity to her courses. Getting Wild with Wool is no exception. I found the course chock full of information and inspiration with many different avenues of learning. And best of all was the communication with other participants from all over the world. It just made me so proud. Maile in Seattle

  1. My name is Laurie and I live in Kingston, Ontario. I visited Deanne’s shop last summer, bought myself her Wave pattern and I’m hooked! Now I look forward to learning proper technique!

Busy in my wool search… found some lovely skeins today at the Verona Garlic Festival… but didn’t buy because I have yet to commit to a pattern or design. Jeesh, I better get my act in gear!

I look forward to learning with all of you.

    Sincerely, Laurie

We four B&B girls are ticking away the days. There, I would love to talk on-line courses with you to while away the winter months.Last February’s Getting Wild with Wool, your first on-line,rug hooking course, was such an exciting exsperience for me Not only the rug hooking part, but also the interaction with so many ladies from all over North America and other countries. Many friends were made, one in particular from Scotland.I urge any who are contemplating taking this on-line course to “JUST DO IT”!

  5. I enjoyed the first course, however, could not follow it faithfully, and was disappointed when it was removed from the internet. Is it possible to make a DVD of the course. I would buy it even if it cost the same as the online course.

    Thank you

  7. Deanne, when you say a pattern does that mean we need a specific pattern? Or does it matter if we start from a blank canvas? Or would you think it all would go better with a drawn pattern from the get go?

  9. no no, you can use any frame , one you have, or even a hoop to get started which are $19.95. If you have someone handy they can make you one like what we have pictured on the shop, the pine laptop

  10. In an effort to get a full understanding of the costs for the course, must I purchase a frame and . . . what is that? Is it that large stand in your online shop for two-hundred something and, if so, can you recommend an acceptable substitute? Just trying to make sure I can really afford it before I enroll, which I am excited about possibly doing.

  11. Hi Deanne,Beckey Headley said exactly as I have said to you when I signed up for this wonderful course…I am so excited and LOVED the materials you sent…just wondering how and where to use some of them…I will be so proud to be able to learn some of your techniques as I have admired your work from the beginning of my rug hooking days.

You are an inspiration to all rug hookers, Deanne…Lots of luck in this. I am sure it will work out just fine. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to take part in this and I am sure all of us will enjoy the trip.

  12. My darling husband signed me up for your course (using my email) and also purchased the wool package. To his absolute delight, the wool package arrived in the afternoon of Dec 24th just in time for Christmas (Bless Canada Post). I was just looking at the course description again and it suggests a landscape pattern. Does one of your wonky house paterns with huge sunflowers count or should it be a land, sea and sky kind of thing?

  13. I’m also receiving the online course as a Christmas gift. I decided to “supplement” my gift by ordering the wool and pattern, which just arrived today. Please tell your staff thank you so much for the beautiful selection of wool–the colours and textures are amazing! I have quite a stash of wool, but couldn’t have replicated the variety. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

  14. Thank you Deanne for my Christmas gift! When I saw that you were offering a online course I told my hubby that is what I wanted. Can’t wait to get started. I run Windows 7 is this going to be compatible with the program you are using? I really, really hope so as I want to sign up soon.
Hope you have a great Christmas on the East coast.

  16. I’m so thrilled with your upcoming online course. Great idea! I have wanted to make the trip to Nova Scotia to take one of your classes for the past 5 years but time and cost have been a problem for me. I can’t wait for cyber camp! But one question for you, how do I best utilize this class? Is it preferable to purchase a kit, or the packet of textures or is there a particular type of pattern i.e. landscape, geometric, story… that would lend itself best to this class?

  18. How perfect that you work on a learning model understanding that the easier we make it for people to learn at different times, in their own ways, the more they can learn. Just as necessary for children as adults, in my experience (as a retired teacher). I suspect I will learn a great deal about learning online – your plan sounds well thought out and likely to succeed. Good Luck! May you find it an easy breeze.
I am signing up as a gift from my parents, both now long deceased but ever with me – how utterly delighted each would have been to have me do this with you in this way, aided by their modest inheritance, which has been wondering when I’d find something to use it for!
I will have to see if my hands, compromised by rheumatoid arthritis, will find hooking an excellently curative exercise or a Bad Idea (if a bad idea, that will not stop me, just slow me; they can do so much by being given the chance to rest BEFORE they begin to hurt, and I became slowly accostomed to granting them that leeway about 15 years ago. They are doing so much better these days I keep trying things I used to do with ease. Knitting is definitely a Good Idea (brilliantly good exercise for them, done in nicely rhythmic spurts followed by one-minute rests which at first drove me nuts) while piano playing is not (perhaps because pauses utterly ruin the rhythm!). Thank you. I only met your work for the first time a few hours ago – every minute spent enthralled by your website full of colour, vigour, humour, joy, love of life, and so much love of a way of life and love of place. I live on an island off the opposite shore of Canada to your Atlantic shores, the Gulf Islands in the Pacific without head-kerchiefs, but with an annual New Year’s Day chilly dip in the sea, and with weekly laundry flapping outdoors.
I’m in, I’m in, I’m in, as Shirley Julian put it so expressively! I shall now dance, arms in air, to the kitchen for a cup of celebratory tea (before or after signing up and paying, I wonder?). I thank you for the freshness of your take on an old art.

  20. Good Questions, thanks. I am just now preparing the materials for this course. We will not work on a set pattern, rather we will learn lots of different ideas that you can apply to any rugs you are making. I use a moshimer medium hook but any hook will be fine, preferably the one you like the best.
I will prepare a packet of materials that you can buy for the course, and I plan to keep it under $100, it will include a variety of wools in different textures. I will try to get a sample up soon on the shop. You will not need this package if you have lots of wools yourself.

  21. Hi Deanne, above it is indicated that we should have the following: rug hook, frame, pattern and backing, and a selection of wool in a variety of textures.

Can you recommend what size you would recommend for the pattern/backing to start? You also mentioned a variety of textures. What would you recommend that we have on hand?

Also, you mentioned that we can purchase a course materials package on line as an add on to the course if you wish. Can you let us know what would be in this package and the cost?

Thanks alot. Look forward to course.

  22. Looking forward to this class, very much.
In reading the comments a question was asked about whether we need to purchase a kit or pattern from you – and if so which one, or is it included (I don’t think so – but want to be clear)…so I look forward to your response.
By the way – I have your DVD – which I find very helpful..will the class be another look at those topics covered -or different – over overlapping?

    Thanks!

I have taken many online courses in my graduate work as an educator, and am very excited to see you apply the technology for a creative purpose.I have been to your shop once and met you, but as I live in New Hampshire and am a teacher it’s impossible for me to attend any of your terrific workshops, but now you are making it possible to do this in the virtual world. Good on you! I’m signing up now!

  27. Deanne, I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you are offering this on-line course! My dream since I discovered your beautiful rugs was to take my vacation in 2012 to take a workshop with you. Unfortunately, I have to postpone that until 2013 and have been a bit disappointed until I saw this! Thank you for offering me the very next best thing, to be instructed by you via the computer until I can enjoy a personal lesson!! 🙂

  28. Oh Deanne, this is such exciting news and such a big job for you! I am constantly amazed at your incredible energy and ambitious undertakings! And I know from experience that everything you do gives great value to the participants.

I will definitely take your online course provided I can be sure that I can view the videos. Some videos from the Internet make my laptop crash. It runs Mac OSX version 10.4.11. There should be some way to find out what operating system levels your courseware can run on. Can you ask your IT person?

Many thanks from Maile Jones (now living in Seattle).

Also, I like your new hair style, it gives you a different look. Mind you, I liked the old look too.!!!!

  33. NINETEEN MINUTES by Jodi Picoult was the book that had the greatest influence in my life this year Nineteen minutes, as the book explains right at the beginning, was how long it took this boy to destroy 10 other children’s lives and have a devastating effect on countless others. The book goes on to unravel the sad history of this boy’s life, from several of the characters points of views. It slips from present to past and back again, is beautifully written and has a lasting effect on the reader’s daily life. As a teacher, I highly recommend this read to every other teacher! It is essential!
