Create Beauty Everyday: The Joy of Rug Hooking
October 16, 17, 18, 2013 This workshop will be held as part of The 2013 Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival
This workshop is about the joy found in creativity and making hooked rugs. It will be hosted by me with Special Guests. I will give lessons and talks over the three days but I will also be inviting some terrific people to share the space with us and lead us to the idea
of joy in rug hooking and creating beauty everyday.
Mary Ellen Nurse
Mary Ellen finds a lot of joy in her hobbies. With a challenging job as a full time crown prosecutor Mary Ellen has looked outside of her work for some of her joy. Think Celtic Cellist and Rug Hooker, think of joy as a hobby, and you’ll be thinking about Mary Ellen. She will share her gifts with us and talk about the joy she has found in her rug hooking.
Laura is a quiet person but her hooked rugs in subdued tones are full of fun and joy. She shares with us a sense of ourselves in her mats as we identify with her women in odd and interesting poses. She knows how to funny with her art and has much to share about this. I am attracted to her rugs because they have a sense of humour and make me laugh. I have invited Laura to share her secrets of instilling humour into her work.
Sheree Fitch understands the value of joy. She has been a purveyor of joy in her children’s books for years, but she also has a deep personal understanding of the value of joy in our lives. Together Sheree and I will share with you a special project that we have been working on with Nimbus Publishing and will host a show of the seventeen rugs that I hooked for her new children’s book . Sheree will give us a talk about joy and we’ll celebrate by launching the book!
The workshop will focus on the importance and value of creating beauty everyday. It is about playfulness, art and beauty and finding ways to add it to our lives on a daily basis through art and creativity.
Together with special guests this workshop will focus on the pleasure found in hooking rugs. It will combine many artistic disciplines , focusing on hooking rugs that are playful, creative and energetic.
You can design or create from a series of joyful patterns provided or you can bring the rug you are working on, or a design of your own. We will learn as well as be playful and have fun with rug hooking techniques that include:
creating dreamscapes, or magical places
creating rugs that have a message of thankfulness, playfulness, and joy.
This workshop will host a big group of rug hookers from all over North America, and will coincide with the sixth annual Nova Scotia Fibre Art Festival, so there will be many activities and events going on oin the community that week. It kicks off on Tuesday night with the opening wine and cheese reception of the Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival if you would like to come for that.
